review:-
A neurosurgeon (played by
Siddharth) and his wife (played by Andrea Jeremiah), a newly-wed couple move
into a new neighborhood and soon realize that the house next door, inhabiting a
little girl and her mother, is haunted. Although initially reluctant to believe
the stories of supernatural elements, the doctor, after a close encounter with
the possessed resorts to exorcism to help save the neighbors.A newly-wed couple move into a neighbourhood and have
a tough time dealing with a revenge seeking spirit. But the spirit seems
connected to their neighbours, so what do they do now? After 'Anando Brahma' and
'Raju GariGadhi 2', it is Siddarth's 'Gruham' that has managed to garner
attention. 'Gruham', aka 'Aval' in Tamil, has received rave reviews from
critics and audience alike. Also known as 'The House Next Door', the film is
based on a true incident. The horror flick starts by introducing a Chinese
family in the 1930s - a father, an expectant mother and their daughter. A
tragedy shakes their family and back in the present, Krish (Siddarth) and
Lakshmi (Andrea) are a newly married couple who lead a content life.
A family
of five moves in next door and get along well with Krish and Lakshmi in no
time. Everything is hunky dory until the next door neighbour's daughter, Jenny
(Anisha Victor), starts behaving in a peculiar manner. Psychiatrist Prasad
(Suresh) is brought into the scenario, with him offering a clinical solution to
the problem at hand. However, when one of the family gets possessed by an evil
spirit, the men of science are forced to seek the help of an exorcist.
How both the families manage to tackle the dangers they
face, takes the story forward in an arresting manner. The trope of men of
science being forced to seek help from the supernatural and the flashback
containing a tragic tale, leading to revenge and possession isn't new. What's
new though is the way the film has been made, with engaging scenes and ample
twists elevating it to a whole new level.
The background score and cinematography deserve a mention
for adding on to the atmosphere the film creates. The screenplay is devoid of
deviations and the performances of the lead actors are a plus point too,
especially Siddarth, Atul, Andrea and Anisha.
