Thor: Ragnarok is more fun than a barrel of winged monkeys, but man, do we have questions.
Why does Cate Blanchett’s evil planet-smasher Hela wear a hat made out of three sets of moose antlers? Why does Jeff Goldblum’s astral-tripping Grandmaster have a blue stripe
for a soul patch? Why does The Hulk bare his enormous green butt in one scene?
Well, why not? Lord knows the Thor franchise, now three movies in, is the part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe most sorely in need of some laughs.
The dysfunctional family shenanigans of Norse god Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and his uppity spawn can and do get wearisome, especially with the constant bickering between stoically heroic Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and his genocidally mischievous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) over who rules their spiritual realm Asgard.
If at times Thor: Ragnarok seems just one whoopee cushion away from being a Mel Brooks parody, that’s the plan, Stan Lee. While the fascists at the Star Wars franchise are firing directors for failing to conform to formula, Marvel takes an agreeable leap forward by putting New Zealand actor/director Taika Waititi in charge of one of its superhero blockbusters.
There’s so much merriment happening in Thor: Ragnarok it seems rude to observe that the screenwriting committee didn’t come up with much of a story — at times you’ll forget this is a Thor movie — while the special-effects people went the opposite route and delivered eye- popping overkill.
